 The Partnership

Future Reef is a $1 million partnership designed to mitigate the impact of climate change on our environment. The partnership is the result of a world first collaboration between Rio Tinto Alcan and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation where industry and science are working together to support climate change reef research. The Future Reef funding supports two programmes delivered by The University of Queensland’s Centre for Marine Studies. The first is the Ocean Acidification Research Programme – the world’s first significant investigation into the impact of increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide on the Great Barrier Reef. The second programme is Reef Searchers – an employee programme where Rio Tinto Alcan employees work alongside scientists at Heron Island Research Station to gather data measuring the impact of carbon dioxide on the surrounding reefs.
