The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is Australia’s pre-eminent independent fundraiser for coral reef research. Established in 1999, its mission is to protect and preserve the Great Barrier Reef.
Through its Board and International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) and a portfolio of project partnerships, the Foundation directly links Reef science with business, government and philanthropy.
The Foundation provides an independent channel for private investment, working with its partners to develop and fund strategic projects which address the major threats to the Reef.
The Foundation’s strategic objective is to add private resources to the current public investment in R&D on the Great Barrier Reef and thereby secure the Reef now and into the future.
The Foundation enjoys the support of the Australian Government for its efforts to facilitate private sector funding for Reef research; like the Foundation, it believes that the protection and health of the Reef is a shared responsibility. The Foundation has made it a priority to ensure that Government is well informed about its fundraising work and ambitions.
