 The Heron Island Research Station

Heron Island Research Station is a world class research and teaching facility and the most productive and prestigious marine research station in Australia. The Station has been established for over 50 years and is an internationally renowned facility for coral reef research and student training in marine sciences.

Situated on the southern Great Barrier Reef, 80 kilometers offshore from the city of Gladstone, the crystal clear water and near pristine conditions make an ideal platform to conduct research and teaching activities.

Bisected by the Tropic of Capricorn, Heron reef is home to around 60 percent of the 1500 species of fish and around 72% of the coral species found in the Great Barrier Reef.
